Enhancing Security with Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

In the digital age, where cyber criminals (the ones you call hackers) are looking for their next targets (victims), securing our privacy online is very important. Do you believe you're secure online? Do you think you can't be a victim? Either Yes or No, by the time you're done reading this, I know you will be sure of your answer.

Are you amongst those who use their name, children's name, date of birth or nicknames as passwords?! If you have such a habit, just know that you are a prime target for cybercriminals. When considering a password, use a word not in the dictionary, include numbers, don't forget to use a symbol and make use of capital letters and small letters in the construction. When you follow this, you are good to go.

However, it's so shocking that even after using a very strong password, it is still not enough to keep our privacy and identity safe on this scary space we call the internet. But, it is time to alleviate that fear! We bring you armor to support your bulletproof jacket (password) and that is called Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). This gives a comforting assurance that no online criminal can get our privacy.

2FA as said earlier gives you double assurance. It is a process that requires two steps to verify a user. Instead of relying alone on your password to secure your account, you have another secret key. The two factors usually fall into three categories: something you know, something you have, and something you are.

  1. Something You Know: This is typically your password or a Personal Identification Number (PIN). It also includes security questions to which ONLY you have the answer, etc.

  2. Something You Have: This is something you have, that is unique and has the technology to securely identify you. This can be a smart card, a physical security key, a security drive, etc.

  3. Something You Are: This refers to biometric data, such as your fingerprint, facial recognition, or even your voice. This form of authentication uses a unique natural part of yourself to identify you. It's tagged as the most secure 2FA.

The Benefits of 2FA

  1. Enhanced Security: With 2FA, you are secured. Even if an attacker (hacker, fraudster, etc) knows your password, they won't be able to access your privacy because they do not have the other key (for instance, your fingerprints).

  2. Prevention of Unauthorized Access: Somebody you did not permit to go to your account/privacy won't be able to access it because they do not have the secret key.

Implementing 2FA

Activating 2FA is without stress and very easy. Most major online platforms, from email services to social media and online banking, offer 2FA options. By following simple setup instructions (usually found in the "Account Settings > 2FA" section of the platform(s), you can increase your online security.

In conclusion, two-factor authentication is not just a technological advancement; it's a necessity in our digitally connected lives. As the dangers of digital devices continue to increase, we must also increase our security measures. By activating 2FA, we can confidently use our digital devices online, knowing our online presence is strongly secured, our data safe, and our digital identity protected. Stay Safe!
